Actress Angela Lansbury has had a career spanning seven decades, but the energetic 88-year-old has no intention of retiring anytime soon. The thunderous applause she receives every night from her audiences denies anyone who doubts her ability to stay relevant. “I think it is simply an expression of astonishment that I am still able to put one leg in front of the other,” she joked in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.
Angela certainly has been at it for many years, creating a huge body of work. You might recognize her in the films “Gaslight,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” the Broadway musicals “Mame” and “Sweeney Todd,” and the long-running television drama “Murder, She Wrote.”
Angela has been performing for as long as she can remember. When she was young, she regularly went to the movies and imagined herself as each character, which no doubt contributed to her impressive acting chops.
Her big break when she was 17 when she cast in the 1944 film “Gaslight.” This film got her both a film contract with MGM and a nomination for an Academy Award. This would not be Angela’s only nomination – she would later go on to win an Honorary Oscar, five Tony Awards, and six Golden Globes.
From movie star to Broadway actress, Angela has been consistently praised for her work. But it was her role as Jessica Fletcher in the television series “Murder, She Wrote” that brought her widespread fame. The murder mystery series ran from 1984 to 1996, making it one of the longest running detective dramas in television history. Angela saw Jessica as a role model for older adults, and she herself noted that “Murder, She Wrote” was one of the first times a television show had been aimed at an older audience.
Today, Angela continues to charm audiences of every age. As to her own 88 years, she told the Telegraph, “I’ve never been particularly aware of my age. It’s like being on a bicycle – I just put my foot down and keep going.” The acting legend is currently reprising her role in a North American tour of “Blithe Spirit,” and is already planning her next project.
