Can Medical Alert Systems Protect You on Walks?

You’ve heard the stories. Someone falls while they are out walking and can’t get up. Or they become isolated on a walk by themselves and have to wait until someone comes by to help. What about getting lost and not being able to find your way back home?

It is scary to think that you may be alone when you need help. Here at Modern Senior Magazine, we believe no senior should have to feel that fear. But what can you do about it? You’ve heard your friend Sally talking about her medical alert and how she has a special button for fall detection at her home. But is there a medical alert that could protect you while you take your walks?

Modern Senior Magazine is here to tell you that the answer is yes! There are plenty of mobile medical alerts that can protect you the moment you step outside of your house. It doesn’t matter where you are going- to the store, talking a walk, or flying to see your grandkids. A mobile medical alert is there to keep you safe.

How Do Mobile Medical Alerts Work?

The idea behind a mobile medical alert is simple. Using data from cellular towers (the same your mobile cell phone uses), you will have coverage wherever you go. If your cell phone has coverage, you have coverage! Some devices connect using GPS signals for even greater protection.

These mobile medical alerts are small and inconspicuous, and can be worn around your neck as a necklace, around your wrist as a bracelet, or on a belt clip. Different companies offer different colors and styles, so you’re sure to find something that you like.

If you already have an in-home medical alert, call your provider and talk to them about their mobile options. You might even consider only having a mobile medical alert system, as it can still protect you at home.

So how does the device work? Much like a cell phone, you’re able to communicate through your mobile medical alert system. Say you’re out walking and you step wrong. Before you know it, you’re on the ground. Press the button around your neck or around your wrist, and a live operator will come on the line asking if you are all right.

Some mobile units come with automatic fall detection. This option will alert a monitoring center when you fall. An operator will then contact you through the pendant, without you having to press your button. Falls can create a sense of disorientation, and a button that calls for help on its own can be a lifesaver.

There are plenty of companies that offer these options, but some of our favorites include the PAX and Kelsi systems by Alert1®, GoSafe by Philips Lifeline®, Bay Alarm Medical® mobile fall detection, and Medical Guardian™ Premium Guardian™ with fall protection.

Perhaps you’ve never had a problem with falls, but directions are not something that you remember. Having a basic mobile medical alert, such as the Kelsi by Alert1®, will give you the option to call and ask for help finding your way home. Most mobile medical alerts come with an option for GPS tracking, so the operator on the other end of your button will be able to find your location in minutes.

Walking in the Sun

Your lifestyle will play a key role in the system that you choose. Don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call the companies’ helplines, as their operators will love assisting you. Ask around to get a sense of which one might be right for you. Talk to your friends and your doctor about what systems they like. As they say, knowledge is power, and knowing that you won’t have to give up your sense of freedom and independence (or that weekly Crossfit class down at the gym) will be inspiring. Happy moving!
